On the ceiling of Debre Birhan Selassie in Gondar, 80 painted angel faces look down in rows, each with the same wide eyes. The church sits at the end of a short trip through Ethiopia’s royal north: Lake Tana, source of the Blue Nile, with a monastery on the Zege peninsula, and Fasil Ghebbi, the walled enclosure of castles begun by Emperor Fasilides in the 17th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

Questions

About this tour

When will this reopen?
When official warnings for Amhara are lifted. Tap Notify Me and we will email you.
What can I do instead now?
Arba Minch, Dorze and Lake Chamo is a three-day lake trip in a region that is open.
Are the Blue Nile Falls worth seeing all year?
They are fullest in and just after the rains. In the dry season a hydro scheme upstream greatly reduces the flow.
Can women visit the Lake Tana monasteries?
Yes, at Ura Kidane Mehret on the Zege peninsula. Some island monasteries admit men only, and your guide will tell you which.
Can I join alone?
Yes. This is a private tour, so it runs for one traveller; add a single room as an optional extra.
