Harar
A walled Muslim city of painted houses and narrow lanes, explored with a Harari guide, and wild hyenas fed by hand at dusk.
Overview
To reach Abuna Yemata Guh you take off your shoes, climb a short rock face on carved handholds, then walk a ledge above a drop of about 250 m. At the top, at 2,580 m, a painted church sits inside the cliff. The Gheralta range holds dozens of churches like it, cut into the sandstone by monks seeking solitude.
These are three slow days for travellers who have seen Lalibela and want what lies beyond it: steep climbs, priests who still read from old manuscripts in Ge’ez, and long views from the lodge at dusk. This route is paused for now; we will reopen it when it is safe.
Itinerary
Your guide meets you at Bole International Airport for the morning flight to Mekelle. The road north takes about two hours, and the sandstone towers of the Gheralta rise ahead long before you arrive. Evening on the lodge terrace, as the cliffs turn red.
An early start from Megab, with local climbing guides who carry ropes and a harness. The last stretch is barefoot: a short rock face, then the ledge. Inside, the priest may open an old manuscript under walls and a ceiling covered in paintings.
A steep path of about an hour climbs to Maryam Korkor, a cross-shaped church 17 m deep, painted by at least three artists over generations. Adam and Eve are on its walls. Seven minutes along the cliff, Daniel Korkor is a small hermit’s cell with a view over the whole plain.
A free morning for a slow breakfast or a walk among the fields below the towers. You drive back to Mekelle for the afternoon flight to Addis Ababa, where we transfer you to your hotel or international flight.
Itineraries can change with weather, road and flight conditions. We will tell you promptly if they do.
