Itineraries
Day 1
Addis Ababa - Bale Mountains National Park
Driving south from Addis will bring you to the Bale Mountains National Park. You’ll arrive at the park headquarters in time for a leisurely afternoon hike, and with the chance of spotting two endemic mammals that frequent the area: Menelik’s Bushbuck and the Mountain Nyala. Birds in the region include the Spot-Breasted Lapwing, the Black-Headed Siskin, the Abyssinian Long Claw, the Blue-Winged Goose, the Wattled Ibis, Rouget’s Rail, and a good many other species. Spend the night camping near the park entrance. (B, L, D).
Day 2
Trekking Bale Mountains National Park
Walkthrough Dinsho and enter the National Park. Around Dinsho, there’s a great chance of seeing both the Mountain Nyala and Menelik’s Bushbuck. While hiking through the park, there is a high possibility of seeing the Ethiopian Wolves. You’ll have time for a soothing break by the Habera Waterfall. The complete hike is estimated to take roughly 4 – 5 hours. Overnight Camping (B, L, D)
Day 3
Trekking Bale Mountains National Park
Enjoy trekking to Wasama through a captivating landscape full of astonishing views. Venture through the scenic Mararo Valley, where the Lammergeyer and Verreaux Eagles build their nests. There will also be an opportunity to spot other beautiful birds, as well as the Ethiopian Wolf. The complete trek will take about 7 – 8 hours. Overnight Camping (B, L, D)
Day 4
Trekking Bale Mountains National Park
The day starts with a hike up Mt. Wasama (4200m), from there we then continue down into the Worgona Valley. Falcons, birds of prey, and even the Ethiopian Wolf are commonly seen in the area. Complete the day’s adventure at Lake Gebre Guracha, meaning “black lake” in the Oromo language. The entire trek will take roughly 7 – 8 hours. (B, L, D)
Day 5
Bale Mountains National Park - Addis Ababa
A short trek from Gebre Guracha up to the Sanetti Plateau will bring you back to the vehicles. A soothing ride will carry you back to Addis. Once in Addis, you get to relish a savory dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant, which features dancers and musicians representing some of the nation’s many ethnic groups. You’ll then be brought to the airport for a late-night departure, or have additional hotel nights booked according to your request. (B, L, D)
Day 6
Harenna Forest
The adventure continues after a morning drive to the Harenna Forest, which is located at the southern end of the park and encourages a unique diversity of vegetation. The Harenna Escarpment towers 2000m above the edge of the forest and presents a stunning view of the entire area. Drive to Goba to spend the night. Overnight Hotel (B, L, D)
